TDIC Projects

My partner Hader Al Muhairi and I researched About Qasr Al Sarab, one of the TDIC's projects in Abu Dhabi. The PowerPoint presentation which we did about it is embedded below.

From all the projects, the one which I felt the best is Qasr Al Sarab project because of several reasons. The first point I would like to make is that it is unique and located away from the hubbub of the city. This means that people can change the way they used to live in and try new ways. Another point is that the project will be located in Liwa where the sand is all around the area which will make it the first choice of desert adventurers. A further point is that it will be enjoyable for those who like traditional activity like falconry.

On the other hand, the least interesting project is Saadiyat Island because it will change Abu Dhabi's traditional design. Another reason is the location which is near to the city centre. A further issue related to the location is that Abu Dhabi will become more crowded than Dubai which will make it unendurable.

In conclusion, TDIC's project economically will succeed, but will produce some problems. For instance, the number of foreign people will be more than expected. Also if we think environmentally it will help to raise the UAE's carbon footprint.

Cool City Comments

Good adaptations

1) Hybrid cars and solar ships are two types of transportation which will be used in cool cities. They are two of the best ways that reduce the amount of CO2 emission.

2) Solar power plant farm which will be used to supply the city with electricity is an alternative energy which makes the city free from pollution.

3) The roof which can be opened in winter and closed in summer is a helpful idea. As a result people will enjoy walking and bicycling in summer because the roof will prevent the sunlight and reduce the air temperature.

Bad adaptations

1) A lot of water will be consumed to reduce the temperature so Water shortage is one of the problem which will be made because the water consumption.

2) The cost of the project. Big budget is required to build projects like cool cities and make it successful.

3) Living in cool cities is a dream of all people but unfortunately, not all of them can live in it because it will be expansive.

"My Carbon Footprint” – “Problems & Solutions”

The amount of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere made by human’s activities directly or indirectly such as transportation used, food and goods consumption, electricity used and the energy used to produce the electricity as well called a carbon footprint. I measured my footprint in the survey at http://www.footprint.org.uk/ and scored 2.73. This means that I am living as if there 2.73 earths. It is under the UK average, but unfortunately we only have one precious earth. My score was divided almost equally in the four categories with food, travel, home and stuff at 25%, 23%, 24% and 28% respectively. My annual carbon footprint was 11.31 tonnes. Now I am going to outline some problem and possible solution for my carbon footprint.

First, highest percentage was for stuff because I do not recycle anything. Therefore, to reduce the percentage, I must recycle paper, food and plastics. My friend Hader told me that a lot of mosques have a recycle bin in front of their door so it is better to put useless paper there. Another issue is that I eat a lot of meat, so I need to reduce it to three times a week instead of once a day. Furthermore, I use my car a lot, so it is better to use it only when necessary rather than all the time. In this way I can help to decrease the amount of CO2 in the air and reduce pollution.

To conclude, it is important to determine our carbon footprint and know how we are contributing at global warming. Then we have to try and do our best to make our planet clean and safe. It is a major problem; therefore, everybody must become involved to solve it and live safely.

“An Inconvenient Truth” - Evaluation

The film “An Inconvenient Truth” which presented by Al Gore is very interesting because of several reason. First, it was easy to understand. Second, the elements and the way to transfer the subject which the presenter used were very clear and easy.

In my opinion the way Al Gore used to attract the audience attention was great and enjoyable. He used graphs, pictures, video clips, and cartoons as well which made the presentation funny and understood. He supported his claimed by facts and showed them to audience. He also mentioned some events happened in his life changed it to attract the audience emotionally.

On the other hand, Al Gore couldn’t say that he helped Tobacco industries to fight against the efforts that claim to put on cigarette-warning labels the words "addiction" and "death". This means he couldn't face his audience with the reality which could make him more real.

“An Inconvenient Truth” - Summary

In the documentary movie “An Inconvenient truth” Which produced in 2006, Al Gore, the former vice president of the US presents about the global warming causes, consequences and states the solutions. He also mentions some events which changed his life as an example of precious things which can be lost and then will be concerned about.

First of all, Al Gore illustrates that global warming happens when the atmosphere layer get thicker by greenhouses gases which caused from CO2 so it traps the infrared and as it increase in the atmosphere the temperature of the earth increase. Due to this statement many problems could occur such as melting glaciers which will raise the sea level if it happens and as a result some lands will be covered with water. Another issue is the warmth of water which causes hurricanes.

On the other hand he states some solutions which will reduce the effect of global warming. One of the solutions is to decrease the CO2 level by making the cars more efficiency. Another issue is to plant trees to reduce the amount of CO2.

In conclusion, Al Gore believes that all nations should cooperate to solve the problem and everybody has the ability to make a change in the global warming. Otherwise, we all will be sorry if we do not concern now.

Critical Thinking Summary

Critical thinking is thinking that does not have a limit, forms logical illations and is high level. All responsible people, including doctors, parents, supervisors and lawyers, use critical thinking. Critical thinking starts when you are willing to recognize how something occurs, why it occurs and what will occur if something changes. Therefore, to be a critical thinker you must listen carefully and be patient before you judge and give feedback. Critical thinkers also look for evidence to support their beliefs and deny incorrect information. A further feature is they are curious which means that they are willing to learn all related things about the topic and looking forward for better, easier ways to do everything. Critical thinking is important because it underlies basic elements of communications and plays an important part in society because schools, courts, businesses and governments are a result of critical thinking.

“Blooms Taxonomy” is a pyramid which Bloom created to classify six thinking levels: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, moving from the simplest to the most complex respectively. Knowledge means identifying, comprehension means understanding, next application is using knowledge and solving problems, breaking down refers to analysis, synthesis means recreating and, finally, evaluation means assessing and drawing conclusions.

In order to be a critical thinker we have to make our thinking limitless, listen carefully before we judge, be ready to give logical solutions and share ideas. By following these factors we will become critical thinkers.

About Me

My name is Naser Al Marzouqi and I am 24 years old I was born on the 6th of May 1984. I was born in Abu Dhabi and it is where I live with my parents and brothers. I have four brothers and one sister.

In 1987, when I was three years old, I lived in Qatar with my aunt and sister because my sister was studying there for two years. After two years, I came to Abu Dhabi and started my education. In the beginning I did not like school because I had to wake up early in the morning and sleep early at night which was difficult for me to do. Indeed, my mother faced a lot of difficulty with me because of that but after a few months I was wont to wake up early. I went to primary school in Bani Yas because we were living there. Then I studied in Abdulqader Aljazairi school in Al Shahama where we are living at the moment.

When I finished preparatory school, I entered the ATI (ADNOC Technical Institute) where I spend three and a half years learning theory and practice. There were four majors to select from: operations, electronics, electrical and mechanical. I chose the last of these and graduated in June 2003.

I started my career in October 2003 in GASCO (Abu Dhabi Gas Industry) as a mechanical technician. I was working for the company in their NGL plant (Natural Gas Liquid) which located in Ruwais when they opened a new training center in Habshan. I volunteered to join the GTTC (GASCO Technical Training Center) because the training was in the plant so I thought it was good for me to learn about my job while I was there. I spent two years there and then returned to the Ruwais plant after I graduated. After that I worked as a mechanical technician for one year before I came to the HCT (Higher Colleges of Technology) in Abu Dhabi.

I have been studying in the HCT since September 2006. I am going to study engineering to be an important mechanical engineer in the future. The studying in the HCT is not hard as many people think but also not too easy. However, it is hard work for the students to reach their goal and graduate with high grade. I am looking forward to graduating with a high GPA and I will work hard for it.
